Nitrous oxide by its lonesome is not great for prolonged surgery, it's best for patients who need to be semi-conscious, like for dentistry. It's simply too difficult to manage someone's consciousness with only NoX - you can't be sure they're totally out or for how long they will remain out.
To be put totally under so you have no recall of the surgery, you need an intraveneous cocktail of several drugs. Which drugs and what proportion is dependent on the length of surgery, your physical health, medical condition, etc. The variations are endless. Some drugs like Diflucan tend to metabolize quicker and so leave your body quicker, which is what you want for a short surgery and quicker recovery times. Regardless, expect to be nauseous and even vomit post-surgery due to the drugs, just be glad they're keeping you from feeling the searing pain. |
