This is what I had today and I feel sooooooo good thought I'd share the recipe:

Throw into the blender
6 ounces kefir
large handful of blackberries (they're fresh and in season right now, yummy!) or similar - frozen berry mix, blueberries, mango yum....
One egg
teaspoon of Spectrum Naturals - Wheat Germ Oil Unrefined,

blend, then add:
Scoop or half a scoop of KAL - Nutritional Yeast Flakes
plus:
Stevia to taste - or use unsulphured, blackstrap Molasses for the minerals.
cinnamon or cardamom to taste.

I got totally high off this shake. I'm still tingling! Smile

Mmm... that does sound very tempting. I got addicted to those kefir protein shakes before.

I had your other kefir shake today - this one sounds great too! Could you refresh my memory about the benefits of nutritional yeast? Thanks!

Shelley,

That sounds sooo good. But blackberries are not in season here and they are VERY expensive, if one can even find them at all. In fact, at this time of the year, NOHTING is in season!!! LOL!!

What suggestions would you have for a subsitute?

Thank you!

What about blueberries/strawberries/raspberries or bananas? Would kiwi work?

Sure, any of those. I find that out of all frozen fruit I like the way blueberries hold up the best, and mango next. If you can find frozen mango it is SOOOO very tasty, and good for you too. Smile

Nutritional Yeast FLAKES are the most nutritious super-food I've found so far. Just tons and tons of good stuff, from essential aminos like Tryptophan to lots of B12. Most yeast, like Brewer's yeast, just has the B's, but nutritional yeast flakes has so many things it's intense. An incredible multi-vitamin. It has a lot of the trace metals that we tend to lack and then cause severe fatigue, like Tin. Most people don't realize the importance of Tin to making other nutrients available. Now that we don't use it much in cans or eat much canned goods we don't get enough, and that means chronic fatigue.

Here's a list of nutrients and % of RDA:

Description: * Full spectrum of essential amino acids * Balanced variety of B Vitamins * Naturally low in fat and sodium * Primary grown for human consumption * Certified Kosher (Excluding Passover) * Candida albicans free * Typical analysis: Protein 50%, Nucleic Acids 8-10% (approx 10% DNA, 90% RNA) 1.28-1.44g

Directions: Two heaping tablespoons taken with water or broth is an excellent between meal snack - or simply mix with fruit or vegetable juices to make a nourishing dring.

Is nutritional yeast powder as good? Those shakes sound delicous! I am having a friend send me some keifer grains so I can start making it. As fas as oils go... she was suggesting I make shakes with fllax oil in the, but is there another oil that would be better? I am going to buy some next week, and I want to get the right one Wink

It's best to cycle thru your oils, since you don't want to keep several in the fridge for long periods as they go rancid fast. Wheat Germ Oil is fantastic for vitamin E, which most people are very deficient in and is necessary for healthy organs, endocrine glands and skin.

Flax is great for Omega 3 fatty acids which are essential for functions like making hormones, proper immune response and circulation - dilating and releasing the veins properly. It's best taken as Udo's Choice, which mixes it with other oils that are not goitrogins. If you eat pure flax, get extra Iodine in your diet to make up for its iodine-inhibiting affects.

Nutritional yeast FLAKES have more nutrition than just Brewer's Yeast, but any kind of yeast is a fantastic safe and natural multi-vitamin. And CHEAP! Smile

yep, it's perfect for smoothies! Smile

Any oil except for coconut will help constipation. Coconut is the only oil that is absorbed directly into the lymphs without needing any bile from the liver. Every other oil will promote the release of bile, which in turn promotes peristaltic action. Yet another reason why low-fat diets are killers. Coconut oil should still be included in your diet because it has things that no other oil has. Great for the immune system.

Shelley:

Could nutritional yeast take the place of GOL's SuperFood or are they very different and perhaps one could alternate a Superfood breakfast and a KAL Nutritional Yeast smoothie every other day???

Also would it be over-kill to add a raw egg to the Superfood mix???? Right now I just crush ice, add filtered water, lecithin granules and a banana for taste.

Thanks so much.

Jan

Ps: is there anyway we can order the products you recommend thru you so you can take the profits???? I have not found any links.

Anytime you see a link for a product that ends up on an Amazon page, we get a tiny percentage when you buy. IF you continue to shop and buy other things we didn't link to, we still get a percentage, just a smaller one. Smile Thanks for asking! If there's a product you wish to buy that you can find on Amazon, I can easily create a sponsor link to it, just let me know.

Super-food is different from nutritional yeast. I'm finding from both reading the nutrients list and my own reactions that Nutritional Yeast is coming way out on top. Super-Food is basically just concentrated food, but even concentrated, those little pills or scoops just can't hold that much nutrition.

Now Perfect Food from GoL holds a bit more because they actually do a culturing process involving yeast and microbes to enhance the nutritional value of the fruits/veggies they then concentrate. But it still doesn't even compare to nutritional yeast. I can FEEL the nutritional yeast acting right away. But some people are sensitive to yeast and therefore the super-food would be better for them.

Super-food has plant chemicals that NY won't have, and if you've been skipping out on eating your veggies SF is a good way to make up for that loss.

Add Super-food and eggs to whatever shake you like. Mixing and matching is totally fine and all part of the fun. Smile

Thanks Shelley. So you are saying nutritional yeast is more powerful than Brewer's yeast? Doesn't brewer's yeast contain chromium though???

Also one more question, I was reading the PH Miracle by Robert Young and he says under no circumstances should you eat yeast of any sort as it is can promote a host of diseases including arthritis and stones, kidney, heart disease and even diabetes. (p. 85) He also says to avoid all vinegars so I am assuming he means ACV too. Please help. I need your spin on this.
There is so much conflicting information out there.

I read his book and to me it is much too restrictive in diet.

Thanks agin for your input.

Robert Young is insane. Read the 5 warning signs of a bad diet in Diet Management. He hits most of them. Saying something that's been in use for centuries is bad for us without solid research is one of the major no-no's.

The whole pH thing when taken to extremes (saying you must avoid certain things because they are acidic) is really bad science. Do we need to become more alkaline if we are ill? Yes, for most illnesses, but once we think we can control it or only eat alkaline foods we kill ourselves. And we die faster from being too alkaline than from being too acidic! LOL!

As soon as someone says vinegar is bad or should be avoided because it is acidic, you know they never took chemistry and are totally clueless.

No, the rules for alkalinity are: avoid refined sugars and use molasses instead; get 20 minutes of sunlight a day; meditate; eat a diet that is made up largely of whole, unprocessed, real foods as Nature gave them to us; prepare and eat them in such a way that it suits the power of our digestion, for exceeding our power leads to toxic acidosis; and be sure to mineralize the body. That's all you need to know about balancing your pH. The rest are ravings from people who want to make money.

Brewer's yeast and Nutritional yeast are often used interchangeably, but when they say Nutritional instead of Brewer's they have a little more value and usually you'll get better reactions. We're talking about nutritional yeast FLAKES which are cultured a little differently, a little longer, so the yeasties can build up even more nutritional value.
