hi fellow gymratz!!

I need some carbs to go in my protein shake. i have long understood that carbs straight after a workout with a bit of protein is an excellent way of repleting glycogen stores so that the muscles recover quicker and have experienced it first hand. i've taken maltodextrin before but i thought i might run it past you guys too. i use honey and mollases at the moment but i'm not sure if it is the best type of sugar to use and whether its as easy to digest as the maltodextrin. also it can increase my calorie content as i've worked out i'm not getting enough.

anybody checked out this site? http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/mohr114.htm
if you can try and mix that with some hollistic theories it works! i even read some stuff about fasting and liver cleansing on that site!

I was just coming on to ask basically the same question. I have read about these two carbs in multiple bodybuilding sites.

Here is another link: http://www.abcbodybuilding.com/windowofopportunity.php

Wanted to see what your thoughts were on this, if it is true/safe, etc.

Thanks!

Honey absorbs very very quickly and that can be exhausting in the long run, so don't rely on it every day.

Molasses is better than any sugar because you get minerals along with it.

No matter what the mags say, every body builder needs a full complemnet of all kinds of carbs, from simple to complex. When you eat it only matters a tiny little bit.

Thanks for the response!
The way every single website I read makes it sound, your post workout meal is essential. They make it sound like you're wasting your time working out if you dont get in your high GI carbs and protein immediately after your workout. There has to be some kind of truth to it if every single source is saying the same thing, don't you think? I'm sure the amounts, especially for protein, that they suggest are inflated so they can make their sales. It's hard to try to navigate through all the info and figure out what to do!
Shelley, I Also know you are anti-protein powders. Would it make any difference if it is an 'all natural' whey protein powder, with no artificial flavors or preservatives? How about amino acid supplements?

Thanks!

I've done really well with amino acid supplements, the high-tech ones in pills. They're based on the profile of an egg.

But as soon as it's a powder in a carton or jug or whatever, it's usually something that is simply not digistable. It's too exposed to this and that, the process is cheap and the proteins get too tangled to do us much of any good. The one exception I've found are the Ultra meal powders from Metagenics, which are based on rice.

None of the whey powders ever digested completely, my tongue always turned into a white mess afterwards.
