| This forum is getting way too much spam - to the point that there is almost more spam than information! Can anyone do anything about this? I come to this forum for information and to try to help others, as I have been helped, and I don't really care that shakira is having sex, or brittney spears is naked! Thanks for listening. |

Yeah, I hear you.
I guess some spamming systems caught up with our forums.
I'm working on the system side, so that spam is at least somewhat limited. Other thing is that there's a moderators on this site, who should care enough to delete the spam when they see it, but no one did it really, as much as I could see. So moderators need to get involved and help this place be and stay clean.
Also, I'm giving my best to do something about this. Will report back with further findings.
Best regards,
Dragan |

Maybe we need more moderators. Any volunteers? |

Actually, if it means the spam is gone (as it appears to have taken over the board yet again) I would be happy to help out. I just hate coming on here and seeing all the spam - if a new (to the forum) person was to come here and see all of it, I doubt they would try to wade through it all to get to the important info!
Shelley, you have helped so many people, and continue to do so - I would hate to see this site end up as a bunch of ads for stuff most of us know don't work!

I agree with Marnie. I can not recommend this wonderfull site Askshelley.com
with any of the spam on. One is too many as far as I am concerned. And I do not see any on curezone.com where Shelley was if I my say so the Shining Star. And I would buy all the Viagra they have if it helped my hand to reach the sellers noses.

Ditto.....I've been gone a while and I come back and find all this spam? Pixelnode, I appreciate that you are doing what you can, but other forums sites simply don't tolerate it. Their systems have a button to report spam; if we have that and I am not finding it, PLEASE let me know!
Anything I can do to help I will do. I don't know enough to be a moderator, but if you can have a level that just polices spam, I will be more than happy to help. |

You can ask Shelley to be a moderator and help fight the spam. I've been a moderator for about a week or so and come here to remove spam about three times a day...I missed yesterday and today it's in the evening...I expect to delete about 50 posts now. I kept track of the posts from last Sunday through Friday and the figures are grim.
There were 149 posts and 121 were spam - there are always as many new users as there are spam posts. It's very disheartening.
Something has to be done on a structural level to stop the spam. But until Dragan can do it, I need help!! Ask Shelley to be a moderator and LET'S TAKE BACK OUR SITE!!!!!!!!!

Dear Dianna,
Thanks so much for your offer on helping spam fight. It's very welcome and appreciated. I'm gonna put you up for a moderator straight away (the more the better). It's great to see people caring for this place as much and willing to help!
Laura, you are a star. I can see that the rate of spaming is going down every day. You are promoted into a "lieutenant" now. The war is on!
All jokes aside, this is very serious problem. Spamers caught up with our forums security levels and somehow manage to sneak in trough the security managed register page. I'm working on stoping them, but they always find ways to get in. I'm trying to fix this holes without the need to change the forums structure. There's some more things that I can do, but they are pretty major, and would involve big changes to the way the forum worked till now. If everything else fails, I will get onto it and revamp the software. Please bear with me, as I try to fix it from within.
The problem has to be solved, becuase the spam is clogging many resources around the site and is potential long term disaster to activity. Just wanted to let you know that this issue is not isolated and not looked at. Rest assured, the problem will be solved soon.
One more time, thanks for your enthusiasm!
Regards, Dragan. |

Dragan,
I keep picturing individuals sitting at their computers, wondering who to spam, what stupid things to say...but is it done in mass by the computer? It's fascinating in a train wreck kind of way -- some spam has links, some doesn't (and without the links, what's the point?!), some is in Italian, some Hebrew, but most of it uses really poor English...misspellings and bad grammar!
I'd like to thank you for building and maintaining this site - it's been almost two years now - you've done such a great job and I know we'll get rid of this spam eventually...let them pick on some other site.
Laura

| I am a mod but for some reason my level of modding doesn't allow me to delete it. I have posted about this before to the other mods. Any ideas? |

Well, it's actually done in a more naive way. You basically set up the computer and forget about it. I assume that the ones targeting us are mostly the ones you mentioned (nothing better to do), cause I change ways for registering all the time and they are accustomizing to the change.
But we're gonna beat them soon. I'm just trying low scale changes at first to see how I can trick them, before pulling out "the big guns"
Thanks alot for your kind words. I'll do my best to keep this place neat and tidy as it has always been.
Cheers, Dragan. |

You cant delete the post's when you are in moderator's mode?
That's strange! Please, let me know what message do you get or what kind of behavior so I can take a look.
Cheers, Dragan. |

Alien, are you deleting the topic (from the bottom right under the post) or from within the post? Through the post itself doesn't work, but it should work if you delete the topic. I have noticed that I can't delete posts in a couple of the forums (won't say which ones here, don't want anyone to get any ideas!)

I am deleting the actual post with the delete button in the top right hand corner - quote, edit, delete, view IP address.
Sometimes it has worked but most times it hasn't Pixel. Maybe I am getting the same issues as Laura?
Next time I catch a spam message I will take special note of which forum it is in and what method I use for deletion.
I am big on keeping spam out of this place. We are about cleaning up not making a mess |

@Laura: I would like to know on which forums you can't delete posts?
@Alien: please next time you do it, see what happens exactly and let me know. Thanks!
Ok and now little announcement!
The life will become easier (I hope) from tonight.
I did one of the major changes to the script, so let's see whats gonna happen now. It would be good if you come back here, to this thread after some time, and report if you've seen or deleted some spam lately.
Thank you!
Btw, Laura because of you, I couldn't find any spam left on the board, to test the changes
Great job! |
