My MD recommended these for me, as I had a Great Smokies test confirming a very very low count of good bacteria. They are the best IMO.
| Quote: | The HMF products are powerful probiotics for relief of intestinal health problems. These Human Micro Flora (HMF) are human-derived strains including Lactobacillus acidophilus and L. bifidus, and the only product line of their kind in North America. All other probiotics are made from animal or dairy strains and may not adhere as well to the human gastrointestinal tract.
HMF Intensive is the highest potency HMF product in a capsule and contains no Fructo-oligosacharides (FOS). Each capsule contains a minimum of 30 billion CFU of L. acidophilus, B. bifidum, B. lactis. Each of the three different strains attach in different areas of the epithelial tissue in the intestinal tract (small and large intestines). This probiotic is a microbial replacement program for the gastrointestinal tract intended for 7 to 14 days depending on the severity of the problem.

| It's nice that they list how long you should take the product. That suggests they're not trying to bilk you of your hard earned money, they are prescribing responsibly. |

h0ppy, I'm really curious to know how you like using this product. I notice it says it can be kept at room temp. if taken on trips. I am currently looking for a probiotic that I can take on an 8 day vacation to Hawaii at the end of next month. Where we are going there are no natural foods stores or good juice bars and I want to be sure I at least take some decent travelin probiotics to keep my bowels healthy while I eat less than perfect food.
Any recommendations for a probiotic that is potent at storage at room temperatures for at leas a day (on the plane there and back) would be greatly appreciated. |

I like them a lot. But right now I started taking their HMF Replete, which has FOS added... and A LOT more organisms per dose. So I think my body is readjusting iteslf, and this initial breakout should be ending soon. Other than that, they are great, super powerful, and perfect for on the go.
| Quote: | Are HMF products shipped with an ice pack?
No. But, after extensive product testing and new freeze drying technology performed by Genestra, it was concluded that the ice pack did not make a difference during shipping since the product potency was still well over 100% label claims when shipped with ice or no ice. The manufacturer states that it is no longer necessary to ship the HMF products with an ice pack for these reasons:
Genestra has added in 50% more probiotic than what the label guarantees per bottle. For example, HMF Forte is guaranteed to have 6 billion L. acidophilus per serving, but there are 12 billion present at time of manufacturing and it is kept frozen until shipping.
October 2004: The manufacturer has increased product stability again, allowing the probiotics to last up to 6 months at room temperature holding their GUARANTEED minimum potency on label!
You will receive your HMF probiotic directly from the manufacturer in about 3-5 days. This product is very fresh and has not been sitting around on our shelves. And, you are guaranteed it will contain 50% more than what the label states.
How do I travel with my HMF probiotics?
We highly recommend you take your probiotics with you on all trips and vacations since their potency will last for up to 6 months at room temperature un-refrigerated. But, when possible and if convenient, we recommend you store your probiotics in the freezer or refrigerator, especially if you plan to preserve freshness of your product for months or years. |

Shelley what do you think about this? It is from the Genestra website. I have been taking my probiotics on an empty stomach.
| Quote: |
What is the survival of HMF probiotics through the stomach?
The pH of the empty stomach is between 1.5 and 1.9 whereas, due to the buffering capacity of food, the pH is raised to between 3.8 and 4.3 in the full stomach. The aggressive nature of the stomach acts as an excellent barrier to invasion by potentially pathogenic microbes. So, for probiotics to be effective, they must survive in high numbers under the same environmental stresses as would severely inhibit or eradicate other bacteria. The HMF organisms were compared with other probiotic strains for their ability to survive passage.
With over 90% survival in the full stomach (when taken right after a meal) and over 50% survival in the harshest environment of the empty stomach, the HMF organisms proved particularly robust and well adapted to the human stomach. This was in contrast to other probiotic organisms, which showed great sensitivity to gastric conditions and poor adaptation to the human host. This study also demonstrated that probiotics should be taken in association with a meal to ensure maximum survival. |
