Hi!

Has anyone tried this kefir d'uva? This type of kefir is made with grape juice and water mixed. I was thinking of trying it, but I´m not sure of the benefits. Since I can't get raw milk I'm not to keen on using regular kefir long term.

Thanks

Hiya Dog! So nice to hear from you. Smile

This sounds like a recipe that's in Nourishing Traditions that I've been longing to try. Basically, you get ALL the benefits of grape juice and red wine with NONE of the problems of the alcohol! It's not easy to make, so if you've found a good commercial source online, please share the link!

For UK link try http://www.thekefirshop.co.uk - i think theres also links to non-uk but I haven't checked them out.

What do people think of kefir d'acqua? I think you have to add sugar, prunes and lemon to the water. Would this not be good for candida sufferers? Or would the kefir goodness make up for it?

Hmm, they sell kefir d'uva on that site too.

The instructions for making it are as follows (from the site):

Quote:

To culture Kefir D'uva we use Red grape juice as standard . you can add water to 50% and even a fresh spice or herb to as an optional ingredient. Fill the jar 2/3 add the Kefir grains then fit a tight lid on the jar and ferment for 24 to 48 hours at room temperature till it reaches a desired taste.

Strain the Kefir D'uva. you should now have a fantastic sparkling drink with lots of light bubbles

When Making Kefir D'uva, You can use Any grape juice only as long as the juice is 100% pure this means without any added preservatives or stabilisers . Although using juice from freshly squeezed grapes has an advantage it is time consuming so store bought is a better option

Both white or dark grape juice or a mixture of the two may be used for brewing Kefir D'uva.

Sounds pretty straightforward to me! Very Happy

Would the sugar in the grapes be a problem for candida shelley?

And do these alternatives to milk-kefir still have the same probiotic benefits?

I too am really interested in Kefir because I suffer from Sebhorreic Dermatitis that is surely caused by Candida/imbalance in my flora gut or hormones? It has been ever present for the past 4 years (i'm 20yr old male); the sides of my nose are red and flaky whilst my scalp and eyebrows are flaky aswell.

Like Coconut, I would also like to know whether the sugar in the grapes could be problematic to people with Candida as well as skin conditions.

Shelley would you know whether taking this form of Kefir would be beneficial in curing/helping Seb Derm? I am also taking ACV and am planning on taking Nutritional Yeast Flakes? Thanks

Hey Johnny thanks for bumping.

I started taking ACV with meals, at first it gave me bad wind and a few spots (presumably die off) but it got better after a couple of weeks. Haven't felt any noticable benefits though but am sure they're there.

Good luck! Having candida at our age is not fun, everybody else eats pizza night and day.

No problem coconut Smile Well I just got my kefir d'uva from thekefirshop.com and can't wait to try it out...hopefully my grains haven't died in the post, lol!

But I am still worried about the effects that the grapes may have on my skin as I'm sure they are loaded with sugar.

It's true coconut, everyone else does eat junk day and night but at least our bodies tell us that that food is not good...we have warning signs that make sure we don't over indulge:)

When you ferment anything with sugar, the sugars get eaten up and converted into acids by the microbes. There is no sugar left. That's why all fermented things are sour. After that it is totally easy to digest. It should also not contribute to acne unless you are very sensitive to the acids. Some body types don't do well with acids and vinegars. Only way to know for sure is to try some, then test with kinesiology, before and after. I like to ask afterwards things like, "did I react negatively to this substance?" "Is my acne from such-and-such?" And I usuallyl get an answer. Smile

Guys/Gals, just thought I would post back regarding the Kefir d'uva. Well I have been brewing for the past 3 weeks and have to say this stuff is awesome and tastes sooooo good. It's got an amazing kick as well! Thank-you to all you guys for getting me into this because I needed to find a way to get some good probiotics inside me that actually work, instead of spending $$$ on not-so-reliable capsules Smile.

For people who have sugar sensitivities/candida/seb derm you just have to make sure you ferment your mixture that little bit longer so that all the sugar is eaten up.

Grapefruit, you say you had problems with seb derm as well and seemed to solve them using EFAs. Could you please elaborate a bit? What were you taking...high omega-3s and did they solve all your problems? Thanks Smile

Hi-

I take 360 EPA/240 DHA (I've heard this is a good mix)
1x daily.

I've heard you can take more/day also.

I am just careful to buy them w. no Lead, PCBs atc... (usually stated on bottle - from CLEAN water) -since fats (fish OILs) absorb toxins.

I have had light eczema in the past - nothing severe - was even brought ON by antibiotics!

Hi Grapefruit, by taking 600mg of omega-3 did all your eczema clear up totally? I am currently taking 3 GRAMS of omega-3 and have only noticed a small decrease in my oily skin.

Yes I too am definitely careful of the type of fish oils that I buy because the cheap ones are almost guaranteed to have unwanted substances in them like dioxins.

hi -
well, I was not intending it to clear up oil...
I didn't realize that it was supposed to.

I just started taking it because I heard that it was beneficial for you in general..
Later I noticed that it helped my skin look younger & took away my dandruff & slight eczema.

It does not seem to change anything acne related....sometimes I dab it on my skin to heal an area that had broken out - my skin seems to like it..
