|
|
A deficiency of Zinc is one of the main reasons for acne, and this is one of the reasons why Zinc is an important part of Skin Food.
It is easy to become deficient in Zinc if you are not eating the foods high in zinc (see the FAQ), or failing to supplement at least occasionally, or perhaps because you're getting too much copper in your diet due to drinking tap water from copper pipes, wearing copper jewelry, using copper pans for baking and cooking, etc. Now some copper is very needed in our diets, but too much copper and things get wonky. The body tends to see the copper and thus ignores the zinc.
Semen is rich in zinc, and thus men lose their entire RDA of zinc each time they ejaculate. Guess that explains why teenage boys get acne. |

I had a fabulously dirty reply to this post but decided to be polite. |

heheheheh well you know what they say about discretion. But this is NOT a charm school, we discuss everything here, and if it's good for a laugh it's good to post. |

I was just going to comment that I am sure there are some guys out there that would be happy to help out some of us with zinc deficiencies.
It's a win-win situation. Though, I guess that doesn't help out the guys with the initial complication. We'll leave the zinc supplements and food sources for them! |

Interesting! Why are zinc & copper often combined in supplements (optizinc)?
I get hormonal acne- one or two breakouts just below my bottom lip just before my period. |

Ah, good question. Every mineral is either helped by other minerals (synergists) or hurts other minerals because of the limited number receptor sites (antagonists).
Zinc antagonizes copper. If you take zinc, you won't absorb as much copper and might instead shed copper, and we do need trace amounts. Some manufacturers take this into account. Since we only need very minute, trace amounts of copper and tend to get too much from copper pipes, I don't worry about that particular antagonistic mineral pair. You can't worry about every single antagonistic relationship or you'd never supplement!
The nice thing is, is if you are overdosed on copper, you can take zinc and reduce your levels right away. |
