Hi Shelley, I have another question! The last few nights I've been doing castor oil packs over my liver/abdomen. I've been putting about 2 tablespoons on my skin and then the cloth over (seems easier that way than putting it on the cloth), with heating pad etc. However I have noticed afterwards on 2 occasions, the skin on my hands and face goes a yellow tinge. This is similar to what happens when I eat too much fat. Could the castor oil be causing problems? It's supposed to support the liver Confused
Thanks
Anne

Oh now that is fascinating. It sounds like your body has a hard time dealing with Beta-Carotene. I've never heard of it only showing up when exposed to oils, but it makes sense considering how oils and beta-carotene interact.

Do you have low thyroid? I can't remember, sorry! Sad

People with low thyroid are prone to having issues with beta carotene and always have issues with fat metabolism. Just a little bit of B-C will cause a yellow-orange cast to their skin. So long as the eyes are not affected that says it's B-C and not jaundice.

If the eyes/sclera are yellow then it's the liver not functioning properly. could be that the pack is increasing metabolic activity but you're still too cnogested to actually exit the toxins the liver is now dealing with thanks to the pack.

Best thing for that would be to do a coffee flush before and after the pack, or a bit of oil before and after the pack followed by fiber or flushing enema. That will ensure that the toxins get released via bile rather than polluting the bloodstream.

Hmmmmmm, that's interesting! My eyes are fine so it's not jaundice.
It only happens when I eat too much fat (though I do go orange sometimes when I juice too many carrots!).....this is more a yellow colour and I'm fine if I eat a whole bag of sweet potatoes with some butter so could it still be the beta-carotene? Having said that I did make a butternut squash soup and been eating that the past few days so perhaps that combined with the amount of castor oil being absorbed through my abdomen could have caused the reaction?

I don't know if I'm low throid. I realised recently that I think my main problem is mercury.....I unwittingly started to chelate it when taking a supplement with 100mg of alpha lipoic acid a couple of months ago and got mental confusion, irritability and constant metal taste in my mouth....now I'm getting fairly frequent headaches, though I've stopped the supplement). Bit worried it's made things worse (moved it into my brain). Was planning to flush this weekend, perhaps I should just do a coffeed flush instead? What do you think?
Thanks again Shelley Smile

yumm... butternut squash soup is one of my faves and it is very very B-C rich, so that might have been it.

Definintely get your thyroid checked, metal problems tend to attack the glands. You can do a self-test quite easily, simply take your temperature every morning before getting out of bed for an entire week. Average the results and see if it's lower than 96.5.

Coffee flush would be great if you haven't had one in awhile.

Yes butternut squash soup is yummy Laughing
I have a thermometer so will do the temperature check Smile
So do you think it would be a good idea to avoid foods high in beta carotene on days when I do a castor oil pack?
Cheers Smile

if you don't want to turn color, yes! but mostly I think it means you gotta check out you thyroid, see if you have any problems with digesting fats (are you taking enzymes?), always eat your yellow/orange veggies with plenty of butter/olive oil, and take a couple doses of Zinc so the liver can deal with Vitamin A better. Zinc lozenges are nice to have on hand for sore throats, or chelated zinc of about 15 to 50 mg. I found 50 mgs pills so I take it like 2x a month as "insurance." Smile

Thanks again Shelley Smile
When you say take yellow/orange veggies with *plenty* of oil.....wasn't that part of the problem.....the castor oil (only 2 tbspns) interacting with my butternut squash soup?
I do have a problem with fat digestion but do take digestive enzymes, perhaps not enough lipase (only 10mg). I'm working on my liver just now and did my first coffee enema this morning (just did 2 teaspoons with one pint of water)...felt quite soothed by it and did notice an improvement in general symptoms afterwards though felt slightly jittery too.
I think I probably am deficient in zinc so will definitely get that!!
Thanks a lot for your help Smile

well it's a double-edged sword - the beta-carotene will not convert into A without fats. Having more there will help ensure that some gets digested properly rather than ending up as beta-carotene stashed away in your subcutaneous fat.

Omegazyme from G of L has more Lipase than most digestive enzyme complexes, so that might be the one to try.
