I purchased a reusable enema bag kit from my local drug store to try doing some basic enemas. I couldn't get it to work the first time, so now I've got some questions:
How long should it take to do a 1 quart enema? It seemed like nothing was happening. After readjusting myself on the toilet, the water started coming out of the tube too fast and started dripping out the rear. So I tried to adjust the flow and now I'm back to feeling like nothing is happening. The tip was inserted as far as it would go.
Is lying down really the best way to do it? I was trying to do it sitting on the toilet as suggested on the bag instructions.
Am I possibly so impacted that the enema is not working? I did end up having a small bowel movement, but I don't think it was due to my enema attempt.

You have to be lying down in order to allow gravity to work for you. I like lying on my back and raising my buttocks for the first five minutes or so so the water is helped up the descending colon. Massage really helps.
Be sure to make sure the water CAN flow, just let some flow into the sink to ensure you have a siphon effect going, then insert it ONLY 3-4 inches, and only as fast as you can handle without letting any get out before you absolutely have to - which will only happen once you get full. The trick is to do it slowly so you don't just balloon out your descending colon. |
