Hi Shelley, my gyn. noticed that my thyroid was enlarged but he wasn't concerned about it. Is an enlarged thyroid the same as a HypoThyroid? If not, why do you think it might be enlarged and is there something i can do to reverse it at all?

Blessings,

Adie

Hi Adie! Smile

No, not the same as hypo at all. If the thyroid is enlarged it's swolllen, which means it's inflammed due to inappropriate immune response becasue the tissues are not vital. When cells are ready to die, the body breaks them down. If the immune system decides that these dying tissues are invading viruses, it goes on attack and ends up attacking the entire thyroid.

Now if your blood tests are normal so far, then chances are good that your immune system is not yet attacking your thyroid, which would mean that it's just lacking Iodine and working too hard to make up for this lack, which increases its size. You need to do what you can to increase iodine in your diet. Seaweed, kelp, oysters, fish, Celtic Sea Salt, trace mineral supplement, are all valid options. A kelp supplement is probably the easiest way to go if you're not used to eating sushi and other Japanese delicacies. Smile

Be sure to get a full thyroid panel done or at least a regular blood test that includes TSH every three months until this situation fully resolves. You don't want to be hyper or hypo for long periods of time, the ramifications are truly awful.

Also, consider your symptoms and diet overall - do they suggest adrenal exhaustion? If they do, start feeding the adrenals. Sometimes the thyroid goes wacky because it's "filling in" for the adrenals, which it is not supposed to be doing, but it will in a heroic attempt to keep us alive. Avoid all caffeine, even green tea, avoid stress, start exercising, add Bieler Broth to your diet regularly, and consider taking Gotu Kola and Licorice Root if you suspect adrenal exhaustion.

Good luck! Smile

No need to worry yet! Just a need to be thorough. Could be you just need Iodine. Smile
